Quest Overview
Starting Location 009-4 Beneath Hurnscald
Level 1
Prerequisites None
Redoable No, only once

What To Do:

It is important that you read the following points thoroughly before doing the quest. Be sure to understand the navigation as explained below.

  1. Go to the Hurnscald Inn and take the stairs going down. Once you are in the next section, start heading down and to the right (southeast). You will see a small cave entrance on the left after you are almost at the bottom. Head inside to find Orum (be careful as the warp faces inwards on the way in, and outwards on the way out, so if you go too far, you will be running OUT of the cave instead of into it).

  2. Talk to Orum, who will tell you he needs help to save Waric, his friend who got kidnapped.

  3. Give to Orum 4 Wisp Powders, 2 Poltergeist Powders, 1 Spectre Powder, and 1 Hard Spike (all of these are available from Aidan and Ishi's Monster Points). This will allow you to get past the entrance below Orum, where the quest really starts to get interesting.

  4. The tunnels below Orum have four barriers. From North to South, these are the barrier names as used in this wiki:
    • Broken
      • The Broken barrier is in front of Torch 1.
    • Final
      • The Final barrier is the only one with a carpet and a warp zone.
    • Middle
      • The Middle barrier is in front of Torch 2.
    • South
      • The South barrier is in front of Torch 3.

  5. After entering the tunnels, turn east, and go past the Broken barrier to Torch 1, in the northeast corner. Click on Torch 1 to find out the color. After that, go back and tell Orum.

  6. The torch colors will have to be changed. To do this, you need colored powders. Orum can make the colored powders, but you must bring him these ingredients: 10 Iron Powders, 10 Piles of Ash, 15 Gamboge Herbs, 15 Alizarin Herbs, and 15 Cobalt Herbs. You will receive 10 Red Powders, 10 Blue Powders, and 10 Yellow Powders.

  7. Go back to the tunnels with the colored powders. Go to the Middle barrier, and try to walk through it. If you cannot get through, remember its color. Then go back to Torch 1 and use the colored powders to change its color to match the color of the Middle barrier. (Use the tables shown below.)

  8. Next, go to the South barrier, and try to walk through it. If you cannot get through, remember its color. Then use the colored powders to set Torch 2 and Torch 1, in that order, to the colors that compose the color of the South barrier. (See Table 1, below.) For example: If the South barrier is Orange, set Torch 2 to Yellow and Torch 1 to Red (Yellow + Red = Orange).

  9. Now go to the Final barrier, and try to walk through it. If you cannot get through, remember its color. Then use the colored powders to set Torch 3, Torch 2, and Torch 1, in that order, to the colors that compose the colors of the Final barrier. (See Table 2, below.) For example: If the Final barrier is Dark Purple, set Torch 3 to Blue, Torch 2 to Blue, and Torch 1 to Red (Blue + Blue + Red = Dark Purple).

  10. Once you are able to enter the Final barrier, STOP and return to Orum. Promise him you will not go any further. You will receive a Candle Helmet (+16 Defense, -1 Agility, +1 Intelligence). Of course you will not do as promised.

  11. Go back to the Final barrier, enter it and head south. You will be warped between Waric and Orum. They are actually bad guys!

  12. You will then appear near the south entrance of Hurnscald. You are now finished with this quest!

Hints:

  • Approach all barriers slowly and carefully. Do not try to rush or force your way through. If you do, you may be disconnected from the server.
  • Be sure to change the colors of the Torches in the correct order. If not, you may run out of colored powders and have to gather more ingredients for Orum.
  • If a barrier is not blocked, there is no need to change colors. Move on to the next step.
  • A lot of the items needed for Orum are available from Aidan and Ishi, where you can trade your monster points.
  • If you do the quest well without losing colored powders, you will use no more than 10 of each. Keep any leftover colored powders, which may be of use in future quests.
  • Once you finish the quest, you will not be able to see Orum or Waric here again.
  • After you finish the quest, you will able to do the Orum and Waric follow-up quest.
