Launchpad or Git patching

I think we should decide upon using one way to do translations, either through Launchpad or with Git repository patches.

• Launchpad is easy to start with for beginners and gives at times very good suggestions from all projects on the site. The site can be slow at times and a maintainer is needed to pull and push the po files to Git and back when releasing.

• Patching Git directly on the other hand makes it easier to test your translations directly (the po files can be downloaded from Launchpad, but that is an additional step).

And then I'm not taking into play above that Launchpad often have non-current strings, which Git do not. At the same time the current client is far from stable and those new strings may be modified many times before release. More mature projects usually have a string freeze some time before release to counter this. The client may not be that mature currently, yet I think it would be worth a try. Bjørn earlier said that the 0.1 version may be a good time to begin with string freezes.

While it is easy to do a translation, it takes time and effort to do a good translation, which has to work in all places the string is used, fit the gui and—to top it off—also has to sound/look natural while fitting the fantasy RPGish theme. So we should try to minimize double work.

Using only Launchpad will reassure that many translations are made. Using only Git patches will probably give greater consistency in a particular translation, at the cost of fewer translations done. Using both will need some vigilance and awareness among translators (and pushers) that the same work is not made twice.

And since I hardly believe a decision is going to be made, though do surprise me!, I propose the following:

Git patch translators should download the relevant po file from Launchpad, update the strings to Git, translate (not taking too much time, since we cannot freeze a language on Launchpad) and upload the work done back to Launchpad as well as making a commit to Git. ✎ Kess^☽ 08:36, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Considering that most translators aren't programmers and thus don't know how to work with git, gettext and patch files I think that the web interface provided by Launchpad is much more comfortable for them and outweighs the disadvantages. --Crush 12:08, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
