Gemstone Powders are used in several quests. Although Gemstones are valueable items, Gemstone Powders aren't as expensive as those as you can make several powders out of one Gemstone.
One of the main uses for Gemstone Powders is the dyeing of the Hitchhiker's Towel. However, Amethyst Powders are also required in the famous quest about The Illia Sisters.
